CHRIS HUMPHREYS - LYNBROOK STUD

Lynbrook Stud originated when we lived in the seaside village of Borth, Near Aberystwyth. At present we are situated in a picturesque village at the foot of the Cambrian Mountains where we enjoy wonderful views of the stunning Welsh countryside.

Penrhyncoch, again near Aberystwyth is just a few miles inland where we still enjoy the mild winters and bracing, clean, sea air. My rabbits all seem to thrive here.

Having kept animals, particularly rabbits all my life I didn`t start showing them until the mid 1960`s when I also exhibited  Cavies (Abyssinian & smooth  in various colours) as well as my rabbits.

Then, much showing was  done by rail. I used to send the rabbits off on a Friday to the show where they would be met at the nearest station and taken to the show. After competing they were retuned to the station to travel home to West Wales.

Showing this way they travelled all over the country from Devon to North Scotland successfully winning many awards in the process.

They had to be kept extremely fit and all preparation was done BEFORE they left home. There was NO grooming at shows.

A number of breeds were successfully kept and shown from Lynbrook including Tort Dutch, Polish (headed by a stunning REW -Champion Blanche, Netherland Dwarfs, Himalayans in the Fancy section & in Rex Black, Smoke Pearl, Seal,Sables,Orange, Castor,

Fur breeds included Smoke Pearls, Sables, NZ Whites. Ivory and Himalayan Satins.

On a trip to Holland the late Vic Eldridge suggested I buy a trio of `Russians, (the Dutch version of our Himalayans although they were not so snaky in type) which were ideal for improving my my Himalayan Satins . They really gave the breed a terrific boost when blended in with the Lynbrook Ivories  headed by that  great doe Ch Beauty.  From these I  worked hard to  introduce the Himalayan Satin which held their own in top company.

Many Champions in the above breeds were bred and campaigned both by myself and  other fanciers  until the dreaded snuffles wiped out my entire stud which then,  had  no treatment let alone a cure,  which were little known and as I was told  `vets didn`t bother with treating rabbits ` in those days as one vet told me!  This absolutely devastated me as you can imagine.

After a virtual rabbitless time I diversed into breeding successfully Irish Wolfhound & Basset Hounds for a few years  until I had a puppy bitch poisoned on her bench at Bath Championship show. The incident hit the front page of  Dog World as there was a spate of poisoning around that time. Unfortunately, the culprit was never found.

I  then gave up showing dogs for their own sakes but continued to judge all breeds .

After this episode, Lynbrook stud was revived but this time NO rail and I was  in a position to attend the shows with my rabbits where I made a great number of friends. Many of whom I still treasure and have contact with.

The stud was soon rebuilt & soon had some fantastic Rex including many champions (photos of some are shown on various pages on this site.) in Orange,Seal & Sable, Black, Castors & Lilacs.

Fur breeds - New Zealand Reds, White & Blacks, Siberians, Argentes in different colours, Lilacs, Castor Satins, & some Thuringers re-created as best possible from stock given to me by the late John Hogkiss when he was working on Tort Rex,. Youngsters carefully bred from this stock won several Best Fur & a couple of Best in Shows. However, they had a long way to go to compete with the beautiful examples of the breed imported today They are stunning.

Fancy breeds soon came to Lynbrook in the form of Dwarf Lops with tremendous character & I was well & truly HOOKED.

In came `Sweet Sue` a dear little Steel doe, `The Cat` a great character disguised as a Black butterfly, & their offspring which included that great favourite `a Chin `Willie Wombat`.These were the fore-runners of the Lynbrook Dwarf Lops which won many awards included `Williemakeit` B.O.B at London.

Our son decided to go in for Chin Rex & he was very successful in the breed. He also had a couple of REW Netherland Dwarfs.

The stud rapidly grew & the Dwarf Lops soon started to take over. They were doing more than their fair share of wining as well as being winning little characters themselves. Many champions were bred & made up both by myself & I`m pleased to say fellow exhibitors who put their faith in buying Lynbrook Lops.( etc)

Alas, due to pressure of business & various other factors I had to disband the stud & while I did my best to find homes where the stock would be  most beneficial in the various breeds I had at the time the Dwarf Lops went virtually en bloc to the late Hilary & Dave Cannon including my Quintruple Campion home-bred REW ` James Bond` . Named as his ring number was 0007. also that incredible Sooty `Icanhopit` among other great Champions & characters.

Alas, my beautiful fawn buck `Williemakeit` was not included as, at a South Wales show he had been passed over the judging table to a  steward who was not watching him  & he  dropped off the table onto the floor hitting the tressle with his face as he did so. All his front teeth were broken and he was  badly suffering from shock for quite a time. With careful cutting over a period of time the teeth grew back OK but the damage was done & he suffered from kidney failure & had to be  quietly put to sleep by the vet.

Elsewhere, there is a  photo of him in Victory Row at the  London before this unfortunate event occured.

When I disbanded Lynbrook  I was on the National French & Dwarf Lop panel as well as others & I was a founder member of the Welsh Lop Circle which I am pleased to see is still flourishing with a new & enthusiastic committee.

As you will see Lynbrook is now back with a vengence and  thoroughly enjoying  being reunited with old ( & new) friends..
